Insurance and reimbursement

What you pay is often less than the fee

Three common situations, and what each one means for your wallet. We check yours with you at the assessment, before any decision.

Austrian Sonderklasse

With supplementary hospital insurance, the operation itself can be covered in full. Confirm cover with your insurer in advance; we prepare the paperwork and the medical justification.

International private plans

Expat and international health policies often reimburse surgery abroad. You receive itemised English invoices and full medical reports, formatted for insurance claims.

EU cross-border care

EU residents can, in some countries, reclaim part of the cost of planned treatment in Austria under Directive 2011/24/EU. Ask the National Contact Point in your country before travelling; we provide the quotes and documents they require.

Fair-play note: reimbursement rules belong to insurers and authorities, not to us. We promise transparent documents and honest quotes, never a specific refund. Where public cover applies to your case, we tell you so at the assessment.

Cost questions

Money questions, answered without flinching

How much does cataract surgery cost in Vienna in total?

Most patients have both eyes treated. With Austrian health insurance, complete private treatment of both eyes starts at €7,040: one assessment (€250), surgery on each eye (from 2 × €3,120), an early check after each operation (2 × €150) and the final examination (€250). One eye only: from €3,770. Without Austrian insurance, both eyes start at €8,700. Premium lenses and the laser option are quoted individually on top.

Why are there two surgery rates?

For patients insured in Austria, part of the operation is settled through their statutory health insurance, so the private fee starts at €3,120 per eye. Patients without Austrian insurance carry the full cost themselves, from €3,950 per eye. Your written quote after the assessment states your exact figure either way.

Does supplementary insurance (Sonderklasse) pay for the operation?

With private supplementary insurance that includes inpatient Sonderklasse cover, the costs of cataract surgery are often covered in full. The actual cover depends on your individual policy, so confirm it with your insurer before surgery. We provide every document your insurer asks for.

Can international or travel health insurance reimburse me?

Many international private plans cover cataract surgery abroad, in part or in full. You receive itemised invoices and medical reports in English for your claim. Check your policy conditions before booking surgery.

I live in the EU. Can my home system reimburse treatment in Vienna?

Under EU Directive 2011/24/EU, planned treatment in another member state can be partially reimbursed in some countries, often up to the amount the procedure would cost at home. Rules, caps and prior-authorisation requirements differ by country. Contact the National Contact Point for cross-border healthcare in your country before you travel; we support you with quotes and documentation.

Is cataract surgery tax-deductible in Austria?

If you pay income tax in Austria, self-paid medical treatment can count as an extraordinary burden (außergewöhnliche Belastung) in your annual tax return, above an income-dependent threshold. Keep every invoice; we issue them itemised. Whether and how much you can deduct depends on your situation, so ask your tax advisor.

Are there hidden costs?

No. The fees on this page are the fees. If your lens choice or the laser option changes the total, you see the complete new amount in writing before anything is booked. Medication drops after surgery are bought at any pharmacy for a small amount.

Why do many providers not publish prices?

We cannot speak for others. Our own view is simple: you are deciding about your eyes and your money, and you can only decide well with the numbers on the table. Publishing our fees keeps us honest and saves you an awkward question.
