Extensive surgical experience

An experienced team and modern hospital infrastructure.

Step by step

The whole treatment in six steps

  1. 1

    Booking

You book an assessment appointment without fuss: online through the form, by phone or on WhatsApp.

  2. 2

    Personal assessment

    approx. 30 to 60 minutes

Your future surgeon carries out the assessment himself. He examines your eyes thoroughly, judges how urgent an operation is and plans the procedure individually.

Together we discuss when an operation makes sense, how it is performed and which lens implant suits you best. More about the assessment

  3. 3

    Your decision and scheduling

After the assessment you normally receive a possible surgery date within a few days. You have enough time to decide for or against the operation.

Postponing or cancelling the operation is possible. You can also arrange an additional consultation.

  4. 4

    The operation

The operation takes place at the Hospital of the Brothers of St John of God, Vienna. It is performed by the surgeon you already know, supported by an experienced medical team.

Everything about surgery day and the procedure

  5. 5

    First follow-up

    within 14 days

The first check takes place within the first 14 days after the operation. The exact timing depends on the procedure and on your individual healing.

The surgeon assesses the early healing phase and checks whether anything needs treatment.

  6. 6

    Final examination

    after 4 to 6 weeks

The final examination usually takes place after four to six weeks. We discuss the final result of the operation and what comes next, such as new glasses.

Afterwards, your regular eye check-ups can continue with your usual eye doctor. More about aftercare

Practical questions

The organisational side, sorted

Medical questions are answered on the home page and the topic pages. This is about dates, duration and organisation.

How long does it take from first contact to surgery?

Assessment appointments are usually available within days to a few weeks. After the assessment we normally offer a surgery date within a few days. How quickly things move from there is up to you.

How short-notice can private cataract surgery be?

With private scheduling, surgery can take place within a week of the assessment when the conditions allow it. That is a possibility, not a guarantee: findings, lens ordering and free theatre slots have to line up.

What should I bring to the assessment?

Your current glasses, a list of your medications, previous eye reports if you have any, and sunglasses for the trip home. If you wear contact lenses, ask us beforehand how long to pause them, because they change the corneal measurements.

Can I come without previous findings or a referral?

Yes. You need neither a referral nor previous findings. If you have reports, bring them along; they complement our examination.

Do I need to bring someone to the assessment?

It is not required, but helpful: your pupils are dilated, and for a few hours afterwards your vision is blurred and light-sensitive. Leave the car at home that day. Companions are welcome in the consultation, especially for the lens discussion.

Are my pupils dilated at the assessment?

Yes. Only with a dilated pupil can the lens and the retina be fully assessed. The drops work for a few hours.

How long will I be at the hospital on surgery day?

Expect about two hours on site: preparation, the operation itself of around 15 minutes, a short rest and the first check. You go home the same day, ideally with a companion.

Can both eyes be operated on the same day?

As a rule we operate on the eyes one after the other, the second eye once the first is stable, often within one to two weeks. Whether something different makes sense in your case, we discuss at the assessment.

Can I postpone or cancel my surgery date?

Yes, both are possible in principle. Please let us know as early as you can, so we can offer the slot to other patients. The exact conditions come with your written quote.

When do the follow-up examinations take place?

The first check within the first 14 days after the operation, the final examination usually after four to six weeks. Your surgeon carries out both.
